Unique Espresso Bar in London

Unique Espresso Bar in London

It was a cold and wet morning in London and I was suffering from a pounding headache.  I knew the only solution was a good cup of coffee.

Armed with ‘London’s top 5 best independent coffee shop” list by londonliving, I set out to find a cure for my headache.  Lucky for me, one of the recommended coffee shops was located a mere 3 minutes from my hotel.

What a quirky find it turned out to be.  Located downstairs of 27a Foley Street (on the corner of Foley Street and Great Titchfield Street), Attendant is situated in what used to be a Victorian lavatory!  The toilet was built in the late nineteenth century, but closed in the 1960s.

After two years of planning and restoration work, Attendant, the new kid on the block, has just opened its door in Feb 2013.

The entrance to the Apartment is actually rather inconspicuous.  One could have easily walked passed it without noticing it, if not for the stream of patrons entering and exiting the stairs.  The coffee shop owners spent eight months to strip back and repaint (with twelve layers of paint) the beautiful iron cupola covering the entrance.

Walk down the steps and you will come to face a tiny counter and subway tiled walls lined with the original porcelain urinals, produced by Doulton & Co.  Obviously thoroughly scrubbed, these urinals have been carefully fitted with long wooden planks onto them, and matched with green bar stools. The choice of colour for the bar stools was chosen to match the Victorian floor tiles.  This setting turned the area into truly unique, individual eating spaces.

There is even an original hand dryer left hanging on the wall.

The old attendant’s office has been converted into the kitchen, but unfortunately, I did not get to peep inside.

Serving coffee by Caravan and an array of sandwiches and pastries, I could see why Attendant is so popular with the working crowd in the area. They even served cold brew coffee!   I had a cup of latte and cheese and ham sandwich.  While the sandwich was decent, I found their latte just heavenly!  I forgot to take note of the type of beans used, but my coffee was very well-balanced and super smooth.  This place wins hands down with the best coffee I’ve had in London to date.

Do drop by for a cuppa the next time you are in London.  It is a mere 5 minutes walk from the Oxford Street tube station (take Exit 5).  Oh, by the way, they offer free wi-fi!
